The winners of the 18th annual Building Better Healthcare Awards were revealed last week with IBI Group winning the Best Mental Health Development for Woodland View Mental Health and Community Facility in Ayrshire.

Hosted at the Brewery in London and attended by over 500 guests from across the NHS and Healthcare industry, both IBI Group’s The Oberlands Centre, Guernsey and Morriston Hospital, Swansea picked up Highly Commended awards during the evening.

The Woodland View scheme produced an outstanding win for best Mental Health Development, in the Building Class. The £47m project with contractors Balfour Beatty was completed in spring this year. Woodland View is an adult acute mental health and community facility that is focused on delivering mental health services for adults and specifically dementia care whilst using a non-institutional design, inspired by the surrounding coastal nature.

IBI Group Studio Principal, Emma White said: “This is a fantastic achievement for all involved in designing and building this high quality environment. It will make a significant contribution to the wellbeing of the local community, providing a secure and therapeutic place to receive first-class, specialist care.”

The awarding judges said: “The design is well considered, bright, and hopeful, and will have a positive effect on the mental wellbeing of its users.”

In the Estates & Facilities Management category, The Oberlands Centre received the Estates Team of the Year Award.

The judges said: “The team has delivered a well-received building…focused on the impact the building will have on its service users, staff and EFM operatives.”

Lindsay Gibbon, Studio Associate Director said: Our Client was extremely pleased to receive the Highly Commended Award…they were really happy that their efforts were recognised against the many other UK entries from much larger estates teams. Acknowledging when developments have gone well and receiving peer recognition is really exciting for our clients.”

Whilst Morriston Hospital was bestowed the Award for Best Collaborative Arts Project (Static), for the Arts co-ordination project.

The Judges described the artwork as “very innovative and thoughtful”, adding “the scheme is clearly rooted in the culture and local history surrounding the new outpatients building.”

The BBH Awards recognise excellence, innovation and professionalism in the healthcare built environment, looking specifically at building design, the patient environment, people, products and estates and facilities management. This year the awards received a 190 entries across 26 categories.
